Musical preference is a very sensitive topic in Argentine Tango forums. In fact, this article may become the topic of controversy in weeks to come. Some of us are very passionate about the type of music that we dance to ... and understandably so. The Argentine Tango is dependent upon a special connection between two people, the atmosphere and the music. The music must fill your soul subconsciously and guide you when to step, pause, or execute a boleo with the intensity that compliments the music. Yes indeed - the Argentine Tango is a very intricate dance.
There are many types of Argentine Tango music in circulation. I have attempted to classify them as Traditional, Nuevo and Neo based on some great discussion found in many online forums. Here are some general guidelines that I have adopted:
The music is part of what makes the Argentine Tango so special and different from other types of dance. Thus, it is important that everyone respects the needs of fellow dancers and that music across the three categories is available to satisfy everyone's needs. At the Tango Saloon, the music is not organized into tandas separated by cortinas as you might find at a traditonal milonga. As an attempt to meet the diverse musical needs of a diverse cultural group, the Tango Saloon plays a mix of music across the three categories and all seven continents with new content introduced each week. Some of us will find all the music enjoyable while others may prefer one or two of the categories. But each week, the composition of the crowd changes and the musical preference of the majority may shift from one category to another. To help keep the music in tune with the shifting needs of its audience, Buffy the digital DJ was introduced in May 2009 to tailor the music to the musical preferences of the evening. Please say "hi" to Buffy during your next visit to the Tango Saloon.
